What causes our skin to age?
In regards to the term ageing skin, we categorise ageing into two main types they are : intrinsic ageing and extrinsic ageing. Both of these processes have an important role to play in what our skin will look and how our skin will age during our lives.
The first type of ageing - Intrinsic or natural ageing is an ongoing and continuous process that begins in your mid-20s and is dictated mostly by genetics. Our body’s natural production of collagen (responsible for skin firmness) and elastin (responsible for skin elasticity and rebound) begins to slow down over the years. The hydration production of our skin also slows increasingly. Therefore as we begin to age in our 20s, our skin starts to loose its elasticity and sag, become thin and dry out leading to the increased development fine lines, wrinkles, and loose skin.
The second type of ageing - Extrinsic ageing or premature ageing is how environmental factors impact the ageing of our skin.These factors can include but are not limited to sun exposure and free radical damage, smoking, pollution, alcohol, medications and incompatible skincare products. Extrinsic ageing and its effects on our skin are the impacts that are more within our control an can be self managed
